Understanding the Different Types of Job Boards

If your company has a job vacancy you may need to pay to post the advert on relevant job sites. You will then have to filter through all the online job sites available and spend time researching which site will give you the best results. This can all be measured in terms of money, resources, and time. With all of this in mind and to help you save time and money, we have put together a list of the different types of job boards.
“Hiring is the most important people function you have, and most of us aren’t as good at it as we think. Refocusing your resources on hiring better will have a higher return than almost any training program you can develop.”-Laszlo Bock
Professional Career Sites
There are a number of career sites in South Africa that have been around for years. For the recruiter or company, they offer a portal to advertise their job vacancies online, download candidate cvs and other useful recruitment tools. These online recruitment services are not free and you may need to sign up for an annual contract at a premium rate.
Apart from access to online job ads these sites also contain blogs, forums, and career resources with suggestions regarding writing CVs and resumes, articles on performing well in interviews, and other subjects of interest to employers.
There are some job boards that act primarily as a reverse job board. In a reverse job board, the main focus is on the candidate profile and resume rather than job advertising. Linkedin is an example of a reverse job board. Jobseeker details are partially displayed to viewers of the site. If companies or recruiters want the contact details of candidates, they need to pay for resume search access.
The average price to post a job on a professional website is around R 900* for 1 job ad. If you are headhunting, you can expect to pay around R100.00* to download 1 cv. You can opt-in for a recruitment package for between R 3500 – R 5000* per month (or more), but then you will be tied into a contract.
Job Aggregator Sites
These sites are essentially search engines for job ads. They gather job postings from various job boards and company sites and consolidate them into a single searchable platform. Think of a job aggregator as you think of Google, but only for online job postings.
With each job posting, job aggregators will include information pertaining to the vacancy. They will provide the job description and application method. If the candidate needs to apply online via the company website, they will be directed to that application page.
These Job aggregator sites make their money by charging the company or recruiter a cost per click (CPC). This means that each time a candidate clicks on that vacancy, the recruiter is charged for that click. The average cost per click for South Africa can be anything between 0.20c – R 2.00* (or more) depending on the platform and the competition.

Data Collector
These sites act as job aggregator sites and pull through job vacancies from various sources on the internet. They do not charge a CPC and most often their main aim is to collect data from individuals. This data is then passed on and used for marketing. This data can then be used to target individuals and attempt to sell them products or services.
When the candidate clicks on an “Apply” button, they will be instructed to provide their email address. That is where it ends. The candidate is not directed to the correct application page and thinks that he/she has applied for the position.
We feel that luring job seekers with job posts in exchange for their personal data is unethical, and against everything that free recruit stands for. It is very important to avoid these types of sites as they will waste your time and you will not see any applications.
Company Recruitment Site
Companies can set up their own recruitment site. They can post company jobs and applicants can directly apply for the job post. All leading companies have a career page and job seekers can view a list of open jobs. Candidates can register and submit their cv online to the company site itself.
Companies can implement recruitment software that can help to source, manage, market and place more qualified candidates in less time. Some of these software platforms do give you the added advantage of broadcasting your job post to their third-party business partners.
There are a number of things to consider when implementing your company recruitment site, such as:
- Do you have the resources/skills to build and manage the recruitment site?
- Would you need to outsource?
- What are the costs involved?
- Will your site generate enough traffic?
“If you think it’s expensive to hire a professional, wait until you hire an amateur.”-Red Adair
