The Habits of Very Successful People

7 Habits of Highly Effective People

In this article, we will take a look at a few of the Habits of Very Successful People.

Be Proactive

Your life is designed by you and the choices you make. It doesn’t just happen. Your future is in your hands. Each day, you choose to be happy or you choose to be sad. You choose success or you choose failure. You choose to be positive or you choose to be negative. Each choice you make will determine if you win or lose.

Every day provides you with an opportunity to make a new choice in your life. And when you do that, it provides a perfect opportunity to do things differently and to produce better results. Being proactive means taking responsibility for your life. You can’t keep blaming your circumstances for things not going your way. Proactive people know that THEY are ABLE to choose their behavior and change their situation.

Reactive people on the other hand are often affected by their circumstances or environment. They find external circumstances to blame for their behavior. If things aren’t going their way, they blame external sources. They often blame their past or their parents. These external sources that are out of their control act as stimuli that they respond to but you have the power to choose your response.

Instead of reacting to or worrying about circumstances over which they have little or no control, proactive people focus their time and their energy on things that they can control. The first step in becoming a proactive person is becoming aware of your thoughts and how you react to negative situations.

Visualize.

Visualizing is the ability to create a mental image of what you desire. It’s based on the principle that “What you believe, you can achieve”. Just as a blueprint is used to build a building. The physical formation follows the mental visualization just as a building follows a blueprint.

You have to make a conscious effort to visualize who you are and what you want to manifest in your life. If you don’t, external circumstances can shape you and your life by default. It’s about understanding who you are, your morals, and your beliefs. Begin each day with a clear vision of who you are and what you want to achieve in life.

Recognize.

To live a more purposeful life you have to recognize your bad thought patterns.  There’s no need to beat yourself up either. As long as you realize that it’s not right and start making that change. It may not happen overnight and that is okay too. Don’t be too hard on yourself, it’s definitely not a quick fix technique.

“Whatever Your Mind Can Conceive and Believe, It Can Achieve.” – Napoleon Hill

Think like a winner, not a whiner.

Winners always see the light at the end of the tunnel. They are always optimistic and always focus on the positive side of any situation. Facing many obstacles, they always remain positive and look for the lesson to be learned.

“I never lose. I either win or learn” – Nelson Mandela

6 characteristics of winners are:

  • Winners take responsibility for their results by controlling those thoughts and actions that lead to their desired outcome.
  • Believing they can!
  • Full of enthusiasm, passion, and energy.
  • Encouraging and building up their peers.
  • Refusing to speak negatively.
  • Thinking Big!

You cannot control much of what happens to you but you can control how you react to it.

Seek to understand then to be understood.

Communication is one of the most important life skills. We are taught how to read and write and spend years learning how to speak. But what about listening? When you were at school was there any teachings on how to listen effectively? Probably not, right? If you’re like most people you probably want to be heard. You want to get your point across.

In doing so you may ignore the other person completely and hear only what you want to hear. Your focus is on the words being spoken and not the meaning of the words. Most people listen with the intent to reply and not understand the other person’s point.

In your mind you are already preparing your response and not focusing on what the other person is saying. Consequently you have already decided what the other person means before he or she finishes communicating. To be effective in our communication, we need to learn how to listen.

Preserving and enhancing.

Your greatest asset you have is YOU! You need to have a balanced program for self-renewal in these four areas of your life:

  • Physical. Healthy eating, exercising, and rest.
  • Social-emotional. Creating meaningful relationships with other people, friends and family.
  • Mental. Learning, reading, writing, teaching.
  • Spiritual. Spending time in nature. Expanding your spiritual life through meditation, music, arts, and prayer.

As you renew yourself in each of these four areas you create growth and change in your life.

You have to consistently continue to practice the other habits and as you do so you increase your capacity to handle the challenges around you. Remember that it doesn’t just happen. It is something you have to work on daily. Each new day brings a new opportunity to improve yourself instead of hitting a wall. All it takes is the desire, knowledge, and skill to know how to do it and remember, be kind to yourself.
