How to tell if a candidate is lying in a job interview
Detecting whether a candidate is lying in an interview can be challenging, as people can be skilled at concealing the truth. However, there are several techniques and strategies you can use to help identify dishonesty. Keep in mind that no single method is foolproof, but combining multiple approaches can increase your chances of making an accurate assessment:
- Establish a baseline: Start the interview by asking the candidate about their background, work history, and other factual information. Pay close attention to their responses and demeanor. Establishing a baseline of truthful responses will help you compare with their later answers.
- Use open-ended questions: Ask open-ended questions that require candidates to provide detailed responses. Liars may struggle to maintain a consistent story when providing more information.
- Watch for nonverbal cues: Body language can reveal a lot. Look for signs such as avoiding eye contact, fidgeting, nervous gestures, or inconsistent facial expressions when they respond to questions. However, be cautious, as these cues can also be due to anxiety, nervousness, or cultural differences.
- Listen for inconsistencies: Pay attention to inconsistencies in their responses or contradictions between what they say and what’s on their resume or application. Politely ask for clarification if you notice discrepancies.
- Ask behavioral questions: Behavioral interview questions focus on past experiences and how candidates handled specific situations. Ask follow-up questions to dig deeper into their responses and verify the details.
- Use hypothetical scenarios: Present hypothetical scenarios related to the job and observe how candidates react. Liars may struggle to provide plausible responses or make excuses.
- Ask about gaps in employment or resume discrepancies: If you notice unexplained gaps in a candidate’s employment history or inconsistencies in their resume, ask them to explain. This can help uncover deception or reveal valid reasons for these discrepancies.
- Reference checks: Contact the candidate’s references and ask about their work history, skills, and qualifications. While candidates can provide biased references, this can still provide valuable information.
- Use a structured interview process: Develop a standardized interview process with a set list of questions for all candidates. This can help you compare responses more objectively.
- Trust your instincts: Intuition can play a role in detecting deception. If something doesn’t feel right or a candidate’s responses seem too rehearsed, take note and explore further.
- Consider using a professional: If you’re unsure about your ability to detect deception, consider involving a professional interviewer or investigator who specializes in this area.
Remember that the goal of the interview is not to accuse candidates of lying but to gather accurate information to make an informed hiring decision. Be respectful, maintain a professional demeanor, and give candidates the benefit of the doubt until you have solid evidence of dishonesty.
