The meaning of hospitality is a cordial and generous reception of or disposition toward guests. Taking this meaning into consideration, we can therefore say that the hospitality industry includes a wide range of businesses, including restaurants, bars, hotels, resorts, guest houses, casinos, cruise ships, and theme parks. The key ingredient that all these businesses have in common is that they all host people coming to eat, drink, sleep, and to be entertained.  Businesses in the hospitality industry are almost all labor-intensive, and it could be a very challenging but rewarding industry to get involved in.

Waitstaff and Bartenders

Other roles could also include, busboy and restaurant host or hostess, barbacks, or assistants to bartenders who clean up and keep the bar stocked with alcohol, glasses, and other supplies. To succeed as a Waiter or Bartender, you should have a neat appearance with an engaging and friendly personality. You should be efficient, observant, knowledgeable, and personable.

Food Preparation Staff

Food is a huge part of the hospitality industry, and it takes lots of employees to operate a kitchen in almost any type of restaurant. The job titles will vary depending on the type and class of the restaurant, but typical job titles include baker, cook, line cook, griller, short-order cook, sous chef, chef, prep chef, head chef, barista and sommelier, or wine specialist. Support or maintenance Staff

Support or maintenance staff are an essential part of the hospitality industry. Support staff range from maintenance staff, such as carpenters, electricians, and plumbers, to cleaning staff, such as dishwashers, maids, cleaning staff, housekeepers and janitors and IT personnel.

Front office staff

Front office staff include general and administrative staff, such as ticket takers, valet parking attendants, concierges, bellhops, porters, desk clerks, reservations clerks, bookkeepers, accountants, guest service representatives, events planner, tour guide, drivers, security, and room service staff.

Sales and Marketing Staff

All hospitality-related businesses need a steady stream of customers to survive, and that is the role of the sales and marketing staff. sales and marketing Job titles include public relations coordinator, public relations manager, sales manager, marketing manager, sales and marketing coordinator, corporate sales manager, group sales manager, wedding coordinator, and special events manager.

Hospitality Management

All of these hard-working employees obviously require managing, supervision, and guidance and executives and managers of all calibers meet this need in the hospitality industry. Typical job titles include general manager, manager, director of hotel operations, director of maintenance, sales manager, marketing manager, executive chef, food and beverage manager, front office manager, banqueting manager, catering manager, human resources manager, chief financial officer, chief information officer, and IT manager.


You can launch a career in the hotel industry with very little education or experience, although some starting positions may require a degree. Most jobs in the hotel industry are service jobs: you will be meeting the needs of guests and should enjoy working with all kinds of people. As you can see above there are many career paths to choose from in the hospitality industry, and therefore a good choice if you are a school leaver or graduate wanting to get into the job market and start at the bottom and work your way up!
