Boilermakers, install and repair boilers and large containers that are used to process and store products like gas, chemicals, oil, and hundreds of other products. Boilermakers also build and repair blast furnaces and water treatment plants.
Some boilermaker jobs also involve installing major pipes used in dams. Boilermakers must be able to follow blueprints. Blueprints are technical or engineering drawings that provide a detailed representation of how something is built.
The equipment a boilermaker uses ranges from welding equipment and cutting torches to other hand and machining tools.
The work of a boilermaker is physically demanding and unsafe. Because of this, boilermakers need to be alert with a strong focus on health and safety practices. Due to the nature of the role, they often work outdoors in extreme conditions. To protect themselves they must wear protective clothing as well as hard hats. safety glasses, and earplugs. They may also be required to use respirators when working in enclosed spaces.
As a Boilermaker, you will mostly work full-time hours, but you may be required to work overtime to meet deadlines or to complete projects.
How to become a Boilermaker
- Theoretical training: N2 qualification at a technical (FET) college or accredited training fascility.
- In-service practical training under the supervision of a qualified artisan.
To qualify as a Boilermaker you will need to complete a compulsory trade test set by the Department of Labour.
The above process can take up to 4 years to complete.
